Maria Rosa Brea

María Rosa Brea, PhD

Dr. Rosa Brea is a Clinical Associate Professor in the Department of Communicative Sciences and Disorders and the Director of the Bilingual Extension Program at New York University. An immigrant from the Dominican Republic, Dr. Brea is a bilingual-biliterate Speech-Language Therapist. She earned her PhD in Psychology from the University of South Florida. She teaches undergraduate and graduate courses in the domains of language development, multilingualism, culturally responsive practices, and learning disabilities. Dr. Brea implements inclusive pedagogical practices in all of her courses, as these are aligned with her overarching commitments to critical inquiry, reflective praxis, and the inclusion of students’ diverse backgrounds and voices in the co-creation of equitable and just learning environments.

At NYU, her dedication to student-centered teaching, social justice activism, and community engagement were recently recognized with the 2019-2020 NYU’s Martin Luther King, Jr. Faculty Award.
